36차 재미한인과학기술자협회 (KSEA) 오스틴 지부 기술세미나  (Mar. 22, 2024)

Reported by Dabin Kim

Seminar Director of KSEA Austin TX Chapter

The 36th KSEA Austin Chapter Technical Seminar, held on March 22nd, featured Professor Jongwoong Park from Chung-Ang University, whose presentation shed light on groundbreaking technologies poised to reshape the landscape of infrastructure management.

Professor Park's captivating discourse centered around three pioneering technologies: next-generation wireless smart sensors, QR SENSE, and LAVOLUTION. These innovations promise to revolutionize the way we monitor structural integrity and health in urban environments. The wireless smart sensors represent a leap forward in monitoring capabilities, while QR SENSE introduces a novel method of conveying structural data through QR codes using ultra-low power sensors and electronic paper displays. LAVOLUTION, a particularly remarkable advancement, employs vision to measure displacement on large bridges without physical contact, ensuring precise and non-invasive health assessments. Additionally, ARGOS, unveiled during the seminar, integrates IoT, LTE, computer vision, and cloud computing technologies to provide real-time monitoring of bridge bearings.

The seminar served as a dynamic platform for passionate discussion and engagement. Attendees from various backgrounds, including local Austin members and remote participants from San Angelo, were drawn to the event by the promise of transformative advancements in urban infrastructure monitoring. Professor Park's presentation highlighted the symbiotic potential of these technologies, emphasizing their collective role in fortifying urban infrastructure, making it safer, smarter, and more resilient.

The post-seminar session saw a spirited exchange of ideas during the question-and-answer session. Attendees posed insightful inquiries, probing into the intricacies of sensor technology limitations and avenues for future development. The diversity of perspectives enriched the dialogue, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the seminar. As the formal proceedings concluded, participants transitioned to a nearby restaurant, continuing their discussions in a more relaxed setting. Here, personal insights were shared, and connections were forged, epitomizing the spirit of knowledge-sharing and community-building fostered by the seminar.

In summary, the 36th KSEA Austin Chapter Technical Seminar provided a glimpse into the future of urban infrastructure monitoring. Through innovative technologies and collaborative engagement, attendees left inspired and equipped to contribute to the ongoing evolution of our cities' infrastructure.

2024 ASU YG Coffee Chat

Heewon Jang

President of KSEA Angelo State University YG

Initiated by the YG group of Angelo State University (ASU), the Coffee Chat event took place on January 31, 2024, at the Dining area in the Houston Harte University Center at ASU. Dr. Soyoon Kum (Advisor) and Mr. Joonho Sung (KSEA Publication Director) attended to address any questions student members might have had. Approximately 30 undergraduate and graduate students attended the meeting and were served with Starbucks beverages.

The Coffee Chat event aimed to provide new or potential members with insights into the KSEA and offer a platform for new and current members to connect, thereby enhancing the Korean STEM communities at ASU. Thus, the main focus of this event was to create a casual and comfortable atmosphere for more relaxed and interactive discussions.

To encourage a more comfortable atmosphere at the gathering, the event was divided into two sessions held at different times. Throughout each session, Dr. Kum introduced KSEA, covering its goals, the types of events organized by the association, and the benefits available to members during the first half. In the second half of each session, participants engaged in discussions on various topics, including KSEA/ ASU YG events, visa maintenance for employment in the United States, graduate school admission processes, internship opportunities, and more. Dr. Kum and other students shared their valuable experiences and insights.

The Coffee Chat event proved to be an informative platform for both current and potential KSEA members, fostering a sense of community and knowledge-sharing within the Korean communities at ASU. Additionally, it provided a successful networking opportunity for new and current members to build personal connections within the KSEA ASU YG group.

Overall, the Coffee Chat event exemplified the spirit of collaboration and community within the KSEA ASU YG group. As the success of this event reflects, the ASU YG group is energized to continue fostering meaningful connections and providing valuable resources for YG members. Based on the discussions regarding preferences and expectations about the overall operation of upcoming events during the coffee chat, the ASU YG is planning events for the 2024 Spring.

On October 28th, 2023, the KSEA Austin TX Chapter hosted its annual fall picnic at the Grass Square of Brackenridge apartments in the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. This delightful gathering served as a unifying occasion, extending warm invitations to both our dedicated existing members and newcomers intrigued by the KSEA community.

Remarkably, the event drew the participation of more than ten KSEA YG members from Angelo State University, demonstrating their commitment to the organization despite a considerable 200-mile distance that had previously limited them to online interactions only. The picnic provided a valuable opportunity for them to finally meet face-to-face and savor some much-needed social time.

The festivities commenced at 11 AM, with an engaging opening address delivered by Dr. In-Hyouk Song, the Chapter President of KSEA Austin TX Chapter. During this moment, he provided a brief overview of the organization's plans for the year and the exciting events lined up for the upcoming semester. Attendees enthusiastically embraced the outdoor activities, from spirited games of soccer and Frisbee to the cozy indoor world of board games. As the noon hour approached, a delectable meal was served, affording our student members a chance to not only refuel but also engage in meaningful conversations about their career development with our Regular members.

To conclude this fantastic day, participants took part in lively games of egg tossing and truth or dare, igniting uproarious laughter and heart-pounding excitement for everyone in attendance, both participants and observers alike.

At 2 PM, the eagerly anticipated grand finale unfolded, featuring a prize draw with Bluetooth mouse and Amazon gift cards, as well as two lucky winners, Jaebum Park (Graduate Student Member) and Hyun-Je Yang (Graduate Student Member), who each walked away with a brand-new television.

Despite an initial drizzle, the event saw a resilient turnout, with 71 participants, including around 30 new members enthusiastically enrolling in the Austin TX chapter. The success of this event was a collective effort, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in the 2023 Austin TX Chapter fall picnic, each contributing to the event's overall enjoyment and success.

35차 재미한인과학기술자협회 (KSEA) 오스틴 지부 기술세미나  (Dec. 1, 2023)

Under the sponsorship of the Korean American Association of Great Austin (President: Lee Heekyung), the KSEA Austin Chapter hosted the Best Paper Award, aiming to celebrate the accomplishments of young scientists and engineers within our Austin community. This accolade was directed towards graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, recognizing exceptional papers in the fields of basic science and engineering produced after August 1, 2022.

Dr. Yeon Ha Ju was honored in the field of basic science for their paper titled 'Astrocytic urea cycle detoxifies ABeta-derived ammonia while impairing memory in Alzheimer's disease,' published in Cell Metabolism. In the realm of engineering, Ms. Mina Huh received recognition for her paper 'GenAssist: Making Image Generation Accessible,' presented at UIST 2023: ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology.

The awardees presented their work and engaged in a Q&A session during the KSEA Austin Chapter Technical Seminar at UT Austin on December 1st, 2023. These exceptional papers' recipients will be awarded scholarships during the 2023 Austin Korean Society Cultural Night, scheduled for December 15, 2023.
